Raspberry Baskets

Our Christmas dessert was tiramisu trifle, coffee panna cotta with ladyfinger biscuit and chocolate... gorgeous, but it disappeared with speed of light and I didn’t have absolutely any chance to take photos.
Since on the 25th we were already without any dessert at home, I decided to make this raspberry baskets and I didn’t allow anybody to get near them before I took some photos. The base is made from normal sweet pastry but the filling was really fresh, made with mascarpone cheese and, on top, I put some fresh raspberries. I bought them with the idea of sangria with red fruits on my mind… in the end they finished in dessert.
Really fresh and light dessert, perfect for the day after Christmas food coma.


A nossa sobremesa de Natal foi tiramisu trifle, panna cotta de café com biscoitos ladyfinger e chocolate... maravilhosa, mas desapareceu à velocidade da luz e não tive absolutamente nenhuma hipótese de tirar fotografias.
Como no dia 25 já não havia sobremesa em casa, decidi fazer estes raspberry baskets e não deixei que ninguém de aproximasse deles antes de tirar algumas fotos. A base é feita de massa normal doce mas o recheio ficou realmente fresco, feito com queijo mascarpone e, por cima, pus algumas framboesas frescas. Comprei-as com a ideia de sangria de frutos vermelhos em mente… no final acabaram na sobremesa.
Uma sobremesa muito fresca e leve, perfeita para o coma alimentar no dia a seguir ao Natal.

Pastéis de Belém

Apesar de neste período as ‘saudades’ serem algo que sinto bastante, este ano consegui pô-las para trás. Tive 4 dias fantásticos com a minha familia e amigos...

Na semana passada passei algum tempo com as crianças em Belém. Estava um dia de sol muito bom e aproveitei para tirar fotos, passear, desfrutar. O resto da Europa estava coberto de neve e Lisboa estava a nadar no sol.
Pela primeira vez em 10 anos que vivo em Lisboa, passei nos Pastéis de Belém e não havia fila à porta!!! Como isso é algo muito raro, decidi comprar alguns dos meus pastéis Portugueses preferidos... ainda estavam quentes, por isso sentei-me num banco no parque e apreciei-os (deixei alguns para a minha familia... mas não foi fácil :-)). Gosto de como são crocantes por fora e cremosos por dentro, definitivamente os meus preferidos!!!

Despite that in this period ‘saudades’ is something I feel the most, this year I succeeded to put it behind. I had great 4 days with family and friends...

Last week I spent some time with kids in Belém. It was great sunny day and I spent it taking photos, walking, enjoying. The rest of Europe was covered with snow and Lisbon was swimming in a sun.
For the first time in 10 years that I am living in Lisbon, I passed by Pastéis de Belém and there was no queue in front!!! As that is something really rare, I decided to go to buy some of my favorite Portuguese pastry... they were still hot, so I sat on the bench in the park and enjoyed them (I left something for rest of my family... but it was not easy :-)). I like how crunchy they are from outside and creamy inside, definitely my favorite!!!

Depois de muitos dias a cozinhar, embrulhar, decorar… posso finalmente anunciar que tenho tudo FEITO.
Entreguei presentes a clientes, amigos, professores, vizinhos, colegas… e sinto-me mesmo feliz.
Foi um trabalho de equipa… as crianças ajudaram a cortar as bolachas, desenhar as etiquetas, o M. ajudou a embrulhar… portanto, mesmo sendo bastante trabalho, posso dizer que nos divertimos a fazê-lo todos juntos.
Agora estou de ‘folga’ para passar uns momentos agradáveis com a minha família…

After a lot of days of baking, packing, decorating… I officially can announce I have everything DONE.
Delivered presents to clients, friends, teachers, neighbors, colleagues… and I feel really happy.
It was a team job… kids helped with cutting cookies, drawing tags, M. helped with packing… so, even being a lot of work, I can say we had a fun doing it all together.
Now I am off to spend nice time with my family…

Sausage meatballs with a tomato and basil sauce, spaghetti and sweet peas

Eu tenho muitos livros de culinária, isso é um facto!
Gosto de ir a livrarias, esconder-me num canto com uma pilha de livros nas mãos e perder-me no seu mundo mágico.
Tenho também de confessar que há tantos livros de culinária em casa que, no dia-a-dia, não os uso tanto quanto deveria. Quando tenho um ingrediente especial ou quando quero fazer uma refeição especial, vou aos meus livros... mas gostava de os usar com mais frequência, experimentar mais...
Então, no outro dia estava a falar com o M. sobre isso e fizemos um acordo... todos os meses vamos escolher um ‘Livro do Mês’ e vamos tentar quantas receitas conseguirmos desse livro.

Portanto, este mês escolhemos o 'Jamie at Home' do Jamie Oliver.
A primeira receita que experimentamos foi almôndegas de salsicha com molho de tomate e manjericão, esparguete e ervilhas cruas.
Porquê esta? Bem, este fim-de-semana o M. foi ao Mercado da Ribeira, ao talho da Herdade do Freixo do Meio. Não é só pelo facto de venderem carne biológica, mas também porque adoramos o sabor e frescura da carne de lá.
Como o M. comprou umas salsichas biológicas frescas, experimentámos esta receita. Foi muito rápida, pois na noite anterior preparamos as salsichas (tirámos o revestimento). Não usei ervilhas cruas... juntei-as alguns minutos com o esparguete.

I have a lot of cookbooks, that's a fact!
I like to go to bookshops, hide in some corner with a bunch of books in my hands and get lost in their magic world.
I must also confess that there are so many cookbooks at home that, on a day to day basis I don’t use them as much as I should. When I have some special ingredient or when I want to make a special meal, I go to my books... but I would like to use them more often, experiment more...
So, the other day I was speaking with M. about that, and we made a deal... every month we will choose one ‘Book of the month’ and we'll try as much recipes as we can from that book.

So, this month we chose 'Jamie at Home' from Jamie Oliver.
The first recipe we tried was sausage meatballs with a tomato and basil sauce, spaghetti and sweet raw peas.
Why that one? Well, this weekend M. went to Mercado da Ribeira to the Herdade do Freixo do Meio butcher. It is not just the fact that they sell organic meat, but we just love the taste and freshness of meat there.
Since M. got there some fresh organic sausages, we tried this recipe. It was really fast, since the night before we prepared sausages (took the casing out). I didn’t use raw peas... just put them few min together with spaghetti.

Chocolate and Hazelnut Strudel

In my last visit to Daunt Books, during my London weekend, I discovered a cookbook from Isidora Popovic, Popina Book of baking. I found it quite particular… first: because she is from my home country; second: she graduated Contemporary Art in London, but her passion about food was such that she started out with a stall in London’s Portobello Market and her products have since been sold at farmers’ markets and in Harrods, Fortnum & Mason, Waitrose and Whole Foods Market (more here).
I love her book; it has a lot of recipes that bring me back home, as this chocolate and hazelnut strudel for example.
Strudel with nuts or poppy seeds is a kind of dessert that my Mother used to make a lot and I love to eat it with a cup of hot milk before going to sleep.

Na minha última visita à Daunt Books, durante o meu fim-de-semana em Londres, descobri um livro de culinária da Isidora Popovic, Livro de cozedura, da Popina. Achei-o bastante peculiar… primeiro: porque ela é do meu país natal; segundo: ela licenciou-se em Arte Contemporânea em Londres, mas a sua paixão por comida era tal que começou com uma barraca no Mercado de Portobello em Londres e os seus produtos vieram desde então a ser vendidos em mercados de agricultores e no Harrods, Fortnum & Mason, Waitrose e Whole Foods Market (mais aqui).
Adoro o seu livro; tem muitas receitas que me levam de volta a casa, com este strudel de chocolate e avelãs, por exemplo.
Strudel com frutos secos ou sementes de papoila é um tipo de sobremesa que a minha Mãe costumava fazer bastante e eu adoro comer com uma chávena de leite quentinho antes de me deitar.

Apple and Blueberry Tart

O que é que gosta de fazer num dia mau e chuvoso?
Eu gosto de estar em casa, estar rodeada de amigos e família, boa comida e bebidas quentes. Por vezes gosto simplesmente de me sentir confortável debaixo de um cobertor, ver um filme ou ler um livro… mas ontem não foi um desses dias. Dia 9 de Dezembro foi feriado em Portugal e ficamos em casa. Estava a chover bastante (até tentamos dar uma voltinha com os miúdos todos equipados com guarda-chuvas, botas, casacos… mas voltamos para casa completamente encharcados :-)).
Encontrei uns mirtilos e massa de tarte no congelador… portanto, rapidamente, tínhamos uma tarte quentinha e crocante de maçã e mirtilos.
Estávamos só nós os 4 em casa, ninguém nos queria visitar pois não queriam sair à chuva… mas foi bom na mesma, sentimo-nos muito melhor depois do primeiro pedaço de tarte.

What do you like to do on a rainy, bad weather day?

I like to be at home, have friends and family around me, good food and hot drinks. Sometimes I just like to feel comfortable under the blanket, see some movie or read a book... but yesterday was not one of these days.
8th of December was holiday in Portugal and we were at home, it was raining really badly (we even tried to go out for a walk with kids fully equipped with umbrellas, boots, jackets... but we returned home completely wet :-)).
I found some blueberries and tart dough in the freezer... so, in no time, we had hot crispy apple and blueberry tart.
It was just the 4 of us at home, nobody wanted to visit us since nobody wanted to go out on that rain... but it was nice anyway, we felt much better after the first piece of tart.
